About Us

Our Reason for Being

Everything we do starts with economic inclusion through business ownership. Too many South Africans are locked out of the economy: not for want of drive, but for want of a door. We exist to open one: to help unemployed people in township communities own and run their own enterprises, and to build the local ecosystem of training, mentoring, professional services, finance and technical support that makes that ownership possible, the scaffolding the market has never provided on its own.

The first two follow from the third. Food and other basic necessities keep getting more expensive, and the households with the least carry the most. Once a participant has trained and opened their own store, that store puts quality staples within reach of the community it serves, and because it trades as technology-enabled refill retail, in re-usable packaging, the waste that normally comes with them never happens.

Affordable food and less packaging waste are what the store delivers. The chance to own it is what we set out to create.

SKUBU sethu Sonke NPC is a non-profit company. Its registered objective is to improve food security and the socio-economic sustainability of low-income South African households; to eliminate plastic waste and reduce the environmental impact of packaging on the planet; and to create opportunities for unemployed South Africans to create their own employment opportunities and become part of the South African economy.

Our Vision

Unlocking South Africa's untapped entrepreneurs by building the local ecosystem the market is missing.

Our Mission

To identify, develop and support township entrepreneurs as business owners, building livelihoods, formal employment and community economic resilience through technology-enabled refill retail.
